In his speech at the Fiscal Summit today, President Clinton stopped short of supporting Paul Ryan’s plan for Medicare, but did figuratively put a stain on the Democrats’ blue dress. Some highlights from the New York Times write up:
“You shouldn’t draw the conclusion that the New York race means that nobody can do anything to slow the rate of Medicare costs. I just don’t agree with that,” Mr. Clinton said at a budget forum sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. Instead, he said, “you should draw the conclusion that the people made a judgment that the proposal in the Republican budget is not the right one. I agree with that.”
But Mr. Clinton said he feared that Democrats would conclude “that we shouldn’t do anything.”
“I completely disagree with that,” he said. “I think there are a lot of things we can do to bring down Medicare costs.”
“I think the Democrats are going to have to be willing to give up, maybe, some short-term political gain by whipping up fears on some of these things — if it’s a reasonable Social Security proposal, a reasonable Medicare proposal. We’ve got to deal with these things. You cannot have health care devour the economy.”
This is in direct contrast to everything the leaders of the Democratic party have been saying, including the deficit speech Obama gave last month.
But wait, there’s more! Cameras caught this exchange between Clinton and Paul Ryan backstage:
CLINTON: I’m glad we won this race in New York, but I hope Democrats don’t use it as an excuse to do nothing on Medicare.
RYAN: My guess is it’s going to sink into paralysis, is what’s going to happen.
RYAN: And you know the math. It’s just, I mean, we knew we were putting ourselves out there. You gotta start this. You gotta get out there. You gotta get this thing moving.
Clinton then seemed to tell Ryan to call him. Bill already hates Obama, and it doesn’t seem like he would mind causing some problems for him at election time.
We have the most influential and successful Democrat alive pantsing the current Democrats and the current President (a Democrat). The last time Clinton went against Obama, they played the race card on him. I’m guessing we’ll find out that Bill has been dusting off the old white hood and robe.
Democrats will literally do anything to stay in power. They know that we will go bankrupt if Medicare and Social Security stay on their current path no matter what the tax rates are, but they are only worried about politics. For some reason, they’re alright with the ship going down so long as they’re at the wheel when it does. Even if there is not a single Republican in government when we go bankrupt, the media will still help the Democrats avoid any blame. When the most successful person in your party is calling you on this, you should probably listen.
