What Ryan said about the closing of the GM plant in his acceptance speech:
Right there at that plant, candidate Obama
said, “I believe that if our government is there to support you,
this plant will be here for another 100 years.”
That’s what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that
plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to
The the media/Obama campaign started eating fistfuls of their own hair and screeching about what a liar Ryan is. “It’s not Obama’s fault! It closed in 2008! Wahhh!” A few key points:

1.) Ryan didn’t say it was entirely Obama’s fault that the plant closed. Read the transcript above. Here is Obama’s full quote from that speech:
And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years.
2.) The plant was still open when Obama took office. Link above.
3.) The plant closed in June 2009.
Ryan didn’t say it was necessarily Obama’s policies that closed the plant, he pointed out that Obama said his policies would keep it open for 100 years. They did not.
The Government is in control of GM.
The Janesville plant is on the short list to build GM’s “future small car”, however it is not selected.
My heart also goes out to our UAW members in Janesville, Wisc., and Spring Hill, Tenn. Our work will not be complete until all of our members displaced by the shrinking auto industry are returned to work. With today’s announcement, we can begin to restore hope that the worst of the times are behind us.
So the government was in control of GM but Obama allowed the Janesville plant (the plant he said his policies would keep open for 100 years) to close instead of selecting the plant for this project.
Here is a news story about the plant closing from April 2009
Our tireless fact-checking has concluded that Barack Obama was President in April 2009. Evidence here.
